Presentation on WWI French Civilian Life under occupation

Braux place de l-eglise

A dear AF Member, Karen Upright

will be giving a presentation at the Junior League on April 9th 7:30 pm

and at the Main Branch of the

Cincinnati Public Library (800 Vine Street) on April 18, 2015

at 2 pm in the Genealogy and Local History program space.

The topic is “French Civilian Life behind the Western
Front: The Journals of Marie-Madeleine Chaineaux”.

Chaineaux lived in Braux, now Bogny-sur-Meuse, in the
Ardennes during the First World War, under German
occupation.

She kept a personal diary from July, 1915 to
December, 1918, comprising more than 300 pages. Her family
submitted the journals last year during France’s “Grande
Collecte” initiative to digitize personal and family
history and memorabilia.

Karen has been studying
Chaineaux’s journals for the past year and has
recently

given a similar presentation at the University of Louisiana
at Monroe.
